Kangshuli is not a "solidifier," it is a "stabilizer" -Clarifying a long-standing industry misunderstanding
During recent technical exchanges, we discovered that many publications still list "Kangshuli" as a "soil solidifier." Drawing on projects we have completed in Yunnan and Shanxi, and on both Chinese and international standards, we would like to set the record straight: Kangshuli is a soil stabilizer, not a soil solidifier. Unlike some other products that might be referred to as a polymer soil binder, Kangshuli's technology is distinct and should not be confused with solidification methods. The two words may look similar, but they describe fundamentally different technologies.
Where the confusion began
The 1998 industry standard CJ/T 3073-1998 defines any material that improves soil performance as a "soil solidifier." The sweeping definition led later writers to lump every chemical or physical soil-improvement product-including Kangshuli-under the same heading. After building a soil stabilized road in Baoshan, Yunnan, and a haul-road link in Lüliang, Shanxi, we have seen first-hand how rigid solidification differs from flexible stabilization, and we believe the two terms should no longer be used interchangeably.
The job-site difference is impossible to miss
Solidification relies on cement, lime, or fly ash to glue soil particles into a rigid slab. The mixture needs a setting period, a curing cycle, and eventually shows the same shrinkage and cracking patterns as cement concrete.
Stabilization, by contrast, uses specialty additives to alter the soil's own structure, boosting its resistance to water, frost and load. The result remains flexible, can be compacted and opened to traffic immediately, and never suffers the "crack-in-two-years, potholes-in-three" routine.

Fixing the translation gap
Because Chinese texts once used the two terms interchangeably, "soil solidifier" was often rendered in English as "soil stabilizer," causing endless confusion on overseas projects. Our export department now uses "soil stabilizer" for Kangshuli and "polymer soil binder" for cement-based solidification products, wording that matches accepted international usage. This clarification is crucial to ensure that the unique benefits of Kangshuli's stabilization technology are not overshadowed by the more traditional, rigid solidification methods associated with polymer soil binders.
Real value where it matters
In Baoshan, deflection values on our soil stabilized road changed by less than 5 % after two monsoon seasons. In Lüliang, where winter temperatures drop to –23 °C, the stabilized section shows no reflective cracking, while the neighbouring cement-solidified lane already displays transverse cracks. For municipal roads, rural highways, or access routes that need long life with minimal maintenance, stabilization is clearly the more economical and sustainable choice.
