Soil Health Guide: Selection And Rational Use Of Soil Conditioners

Leave a message

Soil, as a key factor in crop growth and yield, directly impacts crop quality and output. To ensure sustainable soil health, soil conditioners can be used. These conditioners can quickly and effectively repair soil structure, and with long-term maintenance measures, gradually restore balance to the soil's nutrient ratios and ecological environment, thus achieving the fundamental goal of soil health.

Types of Soil Conditioners

Against the backdrop of increasingly severe soil problems, soil conditioners have become an indispensable component of fertilizer products, especially demonstrating unique effects in inhibiting specific soil degradation. Currently, commonly used soil conditioners in vegetable cultivation mainly include four categories: mineral-based conditioners, salt-reducing agents, pH adjusters, and biological agents. Meanwhile, water-retaining agents and loosening agents are used relatively less in protected cultivation of vegetables.

Mineral-based conditioners

Mineral-based conditioners are diverse, including limestone, dolomite, bentonite, peat, peat blue iron ore, vermiculite, diatomite, zeolite, and sepiolite. These minerals mostly possess unique physical properties and are widely used in soil improvement. For example, limestone can replace lime to correct soil acidification. Mineral-based conditioners improve soil through their physical properties, adsorbing harmful heavy metals and enhancing soil structure and water regulation. Bentonite significantly improves soil structure and regulates water exchange. Zeolite, as a hydrous alkaline or alkaline earth metal aluminosilicate mineral, is not only rich in beneficial elements such as potassium, sodium, calcium, and magnesium, but also has a strong adsorption capacity. Applying zeolite to cultivated soils can not only reduce soil acidity but also effectively adsorb harmful heavy metals such as chromium and lead.
