Haul road dust suppressant is a chemical agent designed to inhibit dust dispersion.
It is primarily employed for dust control in environments prone to particulate emissions, such as construction sites, mining operations, and coal stockyards. Its mechanism of action involves aggregating dust particles through binding and adsorption, or forming a protective film on dust surfaces to prevent windborne dispersion.
Classified by composition, these agents comprise inorganic, organic, and biological dust suppressants. Inorganic agents like calcium chloride absorb atmospheric moisture, keeping dust particles moist and less prone to suspension. Organic suppressants utilise the adhesive properties of polymeric materials to control dust dispersion. Biological suppressants offer an environmentally friendly alternative, typically employing microbial agents or plant extracts to achieve dust suppression.
When vehicles travel, they typically stir up substantial quantities of road dust into the atmosphere, causing environmental pollution along highways. Environmental pollution from haul road transport in mining operations is even more severe for the following reasons: Mining cargo consists of bulk rock, soil, and ore. This material contains large amounts of dust that is prone to spillage and dispersion. The high volume of transport often necessitates heavy-duty lorries, whose wheels exert substantial rolling force, readily damaging road surfaces and raising dust. Consequently, mining haul road transport constitutes one of the primary sources of atmospheric pollution in mining areas.
Haul road dust suppressants are compounds formed by blending two or more dust suppressants under specific physical or chemical conditions. They integrate functions such as wetting, binding, agglomeration, and moisture retention, unifying the capabilities of the aforementioned suppressant types. Wetting enhances dust capture through the wetting action of humectants. Binding anchors dust particles to the ground via adhesion, while permeation integrates them with the soil matrix, thereby strengthening the road surface. Agglomeration clusters fine dust particles into larger aggregates, suppressing airborne dust. Moisture absorption involves drawing moisture from the air to increase the hydration level of road dust, maintaining a sustained moisture content (exceeding 40%) over extended periods. This increases bulk density, enhances pavement flexibility and particle integrity, reduces fragmentation, and suppresses dust resuspension. Water retention inhibits moisture evaporation from dust, prolonging water retention within dust or soil to achieve superior dust suppression.
Currently, composite haul road dust suppressants demonstrate superior dust suppression efficacy and broader applicability, representing the developmental trend in road dust control agents. Research into composite chemical dust suppressants offering both high efficacy and wide applicability is still in its infancy. Advancements in fine chemical technology provide greater raw material options for developing multifunctional composite suppressants. The primary future direction in global dust suppressant research lies in pursuing agents that are cost-effective, highly efficient, simple to operate, and free from adverse environmental impacts.
